Abdomioplasty is a surgical procedure to change the shape and contour of the abdomen
by removing excess skin and fat. The abdominal muscles are tightened, resulting in a smoother
skin over that part of the body, and a slimmer profile and waistline. This procedure is often used
following dramatic weight loss following dieting or pregnancy, having resulted in excess skin
covering the abdomen.

This operation is usually – but not always – an extensive procedure carried out under a general
anaesthetic, requiring some weeks of rehabilitation. Stitches are removed after about three weeks.
The patient can then move more freely and undertake simple tasks. After approximately six weeks
the abdomen is back to normal, although it can take up to six months until all discomfort has
disappeared.
