Protruding, or an otherwise deformed ear, is usually the result of malformed cartilage.
Through oto plasty, (ear plastic surgery) the cartilage is re-formed to give a more natural
form and shape to the ear. It is quite common-place these days for a child of 6 years
plus to undergo corrective protruding ear surgery. Taping up protruding or malformed
new-born babies ears can prove successful. Many adults who suffer this often try to conceal
the problem by careful hair placement. Others even find the protruding ears somewhat becoming,
compensating for a particularly narrow face.

Surgery is carried out under a local anaesthetic. The head is bandaged for a few days.
Swelling and discolouration can remain for up to 2 to 3 weeks. After a few months the scar
on the back of the ear will be virtually invisible.
